- BIOGRAPHY
Sitric mac Amlaib, known in old Norse as Sitgtryggr Silkiskeggi, was the son of Amlaib Cuaran, king of Dublin and York, and Gormlaith ingen Murchada.
In 989, he succeeded his half-brother Gluniairn ('Iron-knee') as king of Dublin. In 998 his cousin King Mael Mordha of Leinster rebelled against the High King of Ireland, Brian Bóruma mac Cennétig. In 999 Sitric was defeated alongside his cousin at the Battle of Glen Mama. To negotiate peace, Brian married his daughter Slani to Sitric and took Sitric's mother Gormlaith as wife. However, when Brian divorced Gormlaith, she began plotting with Sitric against him. Sitric gained the support of Sigurd Hlodvirsson of Orkney and Brodir of the Isle of Man, and the conflict came to its climax at the Battle of Clontarf in 1014. Though the Irishmen were victorious, Brian was killed. Sitric did not take part in the battle, remaining behind the walls of Dublin.
In 1028 Sitric went on pilgrimage to Rome. In 1036 he was deposed and died that year.
