- BIOGRAPHY
Sir John de Stanley, of Stanley, was born in 1350, the son of Sir William de Stanley, lord of Stourton, and Alice Massey.
About 1385 Sir John de Stanley married Isabel de Lathom, daughter of Sir Thomas de Lathom and Joan Venables. They became the parents of four sons and two daugthters.
From 1386 till about 1388 he was Deputy in Ireland for Robert de Vere, Marquess of Dublin. From 1 August 1389 till before 29 August 1391 he was Justiciary of Ireland. From 10 December 1399 till before July 1401 he was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.
About 1405 he was appointed Knight of the Garter and, also in 1405, King Henry IV granted him the Isle of Man, which he ruled as a petty king until his death, and which passed on to his descendants, each ruling as King of Man and the Isles until the time of Thomas, 2nd Earl of Derby, who changed the title to Lord. From 8 June 1413 till 6 January 1414 he was King's Lieutenant of Ireland and, before 28 January 1414, he died at Ardee in Ireland. His widow died on 26 October 1414.
