- BIOGRAPHY
Sambor was born in 1206 or 1207, the son of Msciwoj I, duke of Pomorze Gdanskie, and his wife Swinislawa. In 1229 he married Mechtild von Mecklenburg, daughter of Heinrich Burwin II, co-regent of Mecklenburg, and Kristina (frå Skåne). He had a son Subislaw and four daughters, of whom Zwinislawa, Salome and Margarete would have progeny, Margarete marrying Christoffer I, king of Denmark.
Sambor's only son Subislaw died in 1254. After that Sambor founded a new Cistercian monastery, Samboria, located in present day Pelplin. However he was excommunicated in March 1266 for failure to return lands to a covenant at Oliwa.
Sambor fought against his brother Swietopelk II, and allied himself with the Teutonic Order. He willed most of his possessions, including Gniew (Mewe), to the Teutonic Knights, which permanently established them on the left bank of the Vistula River.
Sambor died about 1278. Challengers to his will included his nephew Msciwoj I, his grandchildren, the Silesian dukes Henryk V and Boleslaw, and his son-in-law Ziemomysl, prince of Kujawien, husband of his youngest daughter Salome.
