- BIOGRAPHY
Reynald was born about 1110 in Dunstanville, Kent, an illegitimate son of Henry I, king of England, by a mistress, probably Sybil Corbet. With his wife Beatrice, a daughter of William FitzRichard, who held a number of fiefs in Cornwall, he had about seven children, of whom his daughters Denise, Maud and Sarah would have progeny. He also had illegitimate children, some sources suggest by Beatrice de Vaux.
Reynald had been invested with the earldom of Cornwall by King Stephen of England, but having afterwards taken up the cause of the Empress Matilda, he forfeited his lands and honours. Around 1173 he granted a charter to his burgesses (freemen) of Truro, and he addressed his meetings at Truro to 'All men both Cornish and English', suggesting a continuing differentiation.
Reynald died on 1 July 1175 at Chertsey, Surrey. He was buried in Reading Abbey.
