- BIOGRAPHY
Son and heir of the 1st Marquess of Winchester, he was born about 1510. In October 1536 he was ordered to attend King Henry VIII with ten men during the Northern Rebellion. He was present at the baptism of Prince Edward (King Edward VI) 15 October 1537. He also accompanied Henry VIII to Blackheath, 3 January 1540, to meet Anne of Cleves. He served in the Boulogne campaign where he was knighted by the king, 30 September 1544.
In 1550 he was styled Lord St.John and Earl of Wiltshire but preferred to be known as Lord St.John. In 1551 he escorted Marie de Guise, Queen Dowager of Scotland, when she visited London. With his father he was a signatory to the letters patent which settled the crown on Lady Jane Grey. Also with his father he received King Philip II of Spain on arrival at Southampton, 20 July 1554.
Again in 1554 he attended Parliament as Lord St.John and in 1557 became Governor of the Isle of Wight. He was one of the peers for the trial of the Duke of Norfolk, 16 January 1672.
Elizabeth Willoughby became his first wife in 1528 but presumably died before 4 April 1552. In 1554 he married Elizabeth Seymour, sister of Queen Jane Seymour and Lord Protector Somerset. Elizabeth's first husband, Sir Anthony Ughtred, had died in 1534 and her second husband, Gregory Cromwell, 1st Baron Cromwell, in 1551; she herself died before 9 June 1563. In 1572 his father died and he became the 2nd Marquess of Winchester.
His third wife, Winifred Bruges, was also a widow, that of Sir Richard Sackville who had died 21 April 1566. John Paulet, 2nd Marquess of Winchester, and Winifred were married in September 1568. He died 4 November 1576 at Chelsea and his widow shortly after 16 June 1586.
