- BIOGRAPHY
Dietrich was born before 1215, the son of Friedrich II von Isenburg, Graf von Isenburg und Altena, and Sophia von Limburg. Dietrich was the last Graf von Isenburg und Altena, but the first Graf von Limburg (Limburg an der Lenne). He married Aleidis (Adelheid), Gräfin von Sayn, a daughter of Johann I, Graf von Sayn und Starkenburg, and Adelheid von de Marck. They had three sons and three daughters, of whom two sons would have progeny.
Dietrich was disinherited of all his territories in the First Reich of the Holy Roman Empire following the execution of his father, but with military support of his uncle Heinrich IV, duke of Limburg he recovered a small territory out of his previous possessions. He built the castles of Limburg (Hohen-Limburg) and Neu Isenberg (soon lost in favour of the counts von der Mark) and took the title of Graf von Limburg. His country, now known as Hohen-Limburg an der Lenne, comprised only 2.5 square miles near Gevelsberg, Hattingen and Dortmund. The castle of Limburg was mentioned on 1 May 1243 as 'Novum Castrum Limburg'.
Dietrich died in 1301.
