- BIOGRAPHY
August was born in Neuburg on 2 October 1582, the second son of Philipp Ludwig, Pfalzgraf von Neuburg, and Anna, Herzogin von Kleve, Jülich und Berg. He studied at the University of Tübingen, then embarked on a Grand Tour through Italy, England, France, Sweden and many German princely courts.
After his father's death in 1614 his territories were partitioned between August and his two brothers, and August received northern portions of the duchy of Neuburg which were constituted as the duchy of Sulzbach. They came into conflict when his Catholic brother Wolfgang Wilhelm sought to extend the counter-reformation into Sulzbach. In 1618 August, a committed Lutheran, founded a school in Sulzbach.
On 12 July 1620 at the castle of Husum, August married Hedwig, Prinzessin von Holstein-Gottorp, daughter of Johann Adolf, duke of Holstein-Gottorp, and Auguste, princess of Denmark and Norway. They had seven children, of whom Christian August, Anna Sofie and Auguste Sophie would have progeny.
In 1630 August travelled to Leipzig, where the Swedish king Gustav II Adolf was quartered with his army. He then stayed with the king in his march through Germany, and won his trust. In 1632 Gustav Adolf sent him from Nürnberg to Saxony, to prevent Johann Georg I, Kurfürst von Sachsen, from forming an alliance with Wallenstein. He succeeded in this, but died at Windsheim in Neustadt on 14 August 1632. He was buried in Lauingen, Bavaria.
