- BIOGRAPHY
Louise was born about 1490, the daughter of Guillaume de Montmorency, seigneur d'Escouen de Thore de Chantilly, and Anne Pot, comtesse de St.Pol. She was the younger sister of Anne de Montmorency, constable of France.
In 1511 Louise married her first husband Ferry de Mailly, baron de Conti, son of Adrien de Mailly, seigneur de Conti, and Jeanne de Glymes. This marriage produced a daughter Madeleine, who would have progeny, marrying Charles de Roye, comte de Roucy. Ferry died in 1513, and on 6 December 1514 Louise married Gaspard I de Coligny, sire de Coligny-le-Vieil, son of Jean III de Coligny, sire de Coligny-le-Vieil, and Eleonore de Courcelles. From her second marriage she had four sons of whom three played important roles in the first period of the French Wars of Religion: Odet, cardinal de Châtillon; Gaspard, admiral of France; and François, seigneur d'Andelot. Her son Pierre was only 13 when he died.
Louise had considerable patronage power independently of her husband, and had an important role in spreading the influence of Calvinism in France in the 16th century. She died in Paris on 12 June 1541, and was buried at the Coligny estate of Châtillon-sur-Loing.
