- BIOGRAPHY
Henri was born on 2 November 1572 in Paris, the third child of Jacques de Savoie, duc de Nemours and Anne d'Este. He was known as the marquis de Saint-Sorlin until 1595 when he succeeded his brother Charles Emanuel as duc de Nemours.
Henri had helped the Roman Catholic Savoyards to capture Saluzzo (in 1588) and had fought for the Holy League in the Dauphiné, of which he became governor in 1591. Becoming duc de Nemours in 1595, he submitted the following year to King Henri IV. After taking part in campaigns at Rouen and Amiens, he retired to his estates at Annecy. When the Spanish went to war against Savoy in 1615, however, Henri raised an army to cooperate with them, but he had to make peace in 1616. In 1618 he married Anne de Lorraine, duchesse d'Aumale, the only child of Charles de Lorraine, duc d'Aumale, and Marie de Lorraine. They had four children, of whom only Charles Amédée would have progeny. Henri passed the rest of his life in Paris, brilliant at court as a patron of ballet and the arts.
Henri died on 10 July 1632 in Paris.
