- BIOGRAPHY
William Villers, 2nd Viscount Grandison, was born in 1614, the son of Sir Edward Villiers and Barbara St.John.
On 20 May 1638 the Prince of Wales was installed as a Knight of the Garter and on this day four knights where dubbed at Windsor of which William Villiers was one. He did not take his seat in the House of Lords but was introduced by proxy on 26 October 1640.
He married Mary Bayning, daughter of Paul Bayning, 1st Viscount Bayning, and Anne Glemham, on 31 October 1639 at St.Margaret's, Westminster. They became the parents of a daughter, Barbara.
He distinguished himself nobly in the Royal cause at the head of his regiment and was mortally wounded, 24 July 1643, at the siege of Bristol. He died at Oxford on 30 September 1643 and, on 2 October, was buried there in Christ Church Cathedral. His first cousin, Charles Villiers, 2nd Earl of Anglesey, married his widow, and when widowed again, Mary married Arthur Gorges.
