- BIOGRAPHY
James Gordon was born in 1714, son of James Gordon, of Sheepsbridge and Lisdaff. In 1738, with his brother John, he went from Newry, county Down, Ireland, to Virginia. He settled in Lancaster county, was a justice of the peace, colonel of the militia and a prominent planter and merchant.
James Gordon married first Milicent Conway and secondly Mary Harrison. He was one of the pioneers of Presbyterianism in Eastern Virigina, and was intimate with Samuel Davies and James Waddell, 'the Blind Preacher', who married his daughter Mary.
James Gordon married 2 June 1768. He had kept an interesting diary which has been published in the 'William and Mary Quarterly Magazine.'
