Egas was born about 1035, the son of Dom Gomes Echigues and his first wife Gontronde Moniz de Tauro. In 1050 he married Gontinha Gonçalves de Maia, daughter of Gonçalo Trastamires, senhor da Maia, and Mécia Rodrigues. They had three sons of whom Mem would have progeny.
Egas was the first of his line to use the name of Sousa. He was lord of Sousa, Novelas and Felgueiras. He served as governor of the entire region between the Douro and the Minho. As captain-general he won a battle against the king of Tunis near the town of Beja.
Egas was mentioned in 1071. His year of death is not recorded, but he was buried in the monastery of Santa Maria de Pombeiro in northern Portugal.
