Joao Afonso 'the Good' de Portugal, 2,conde de Albuquerque, was born about 1305, the only child of Afonso Sanchez bâtard de Portugal, 1.conde de Albuquerque, an illegitimate son of Diniz 'o Lavrador', king of Portugal. Joao Afonso became 2nd count of Albuquerque, señor de Azagala, Codosera, Alconchel, Medellin, Memezes and Tiedra. He married Isabel de Menezes, señora de Montealegre but their marriage remained childless. However by Maria Rodriguez Barba he fathered five illegitimate children, of whom a son and daughter would have progeny.
When Pedro 'the Cruel' became king of Castile, Joao Afonso became his principal counsellor. In 1351 on orders of the widowed Queen Maria, Pedro's mother, Joao Afonso was involved in the murder of Leonor de Guzmán, the mistress of the late King Alfonso XI 'el Justo'. In the autumn of 1354, on the orders of King Pedro, Joao Afonso was poisoned. In 1365 Pedro was also responsible for the murder of Joao Afonso's eldest son Martim Gil, bâtard d'Albuquerque.
