- BIOGRAPHY
Ludwig III was first mentioned in 1220, the son of Ludwig II, Graf von Oettingen, and his wife Sophia. He ruled the county of Oettingen over the end of the Hohenstaufen empire and the Interregnum until the time of Rudolf I von Habsburg, emperor-elect (who ruled from 1273 to 1291). During the period of great upheaval around 1250, Ludwig was a supporter of King Conrad IV (who ruled from 1237 to 1254), the son of Emperor Friedrich II, and he was able to bring under his control the most important royal towns, followed by the confirmation of a branch of the Teutonic Order in the count's seat in 1242 and the founding of a Cistercian convent in Kirchheim (in Baden-Württemberg) as a future family monastery and family gravesite before 1270.
Before 28 June 1241 Ludwig married a daughter of Heinrich III, Graf von Berg, Markgraf von Burgau, and his wife Adelheid. They had two sons Ludwig V and Konrad IV who would have progeny, and a daughter Sophia. Ludwig also had a daughter Ursula who would have progeny, marrying Albrecht II 'der Minnesänger', Graf von Hohenberg.
Ludwig died on 24 April 1279. He was buried in the Cistercian convent at Kirchheim that he had founded.
