- BIOGRAPHY
Walter was the eldest son of Walter III Berthout, Heer van Grimberghe, and Margareth de Grimbergen. He was lord of the land of Malines as a fief of the Church of Liège. With his wife Sophia/Guda von Looz, daughter of Ludwig I, Graf von Looz, Burggraf von Mainz, and Agnes von Metz, he had a son Walter V who would have progeny, and a son Gilles.
Walter established himself at Malines after witnessing the destruction of the family's castle fortress of Grimbergen in 1159 by Godfried III, duke of Lower-Lorraine, comte de Louvain. Despite these past major conflicts, he returned to favour with the dukes of Brabant.
Walter died in 1201.
