- BIOGRAPHY
Marie was one of two daughters of Jean de Montmirail, châtelain de Cambrai, and Helvide de Dampierre, dame de Somsois. In 1213 she became the third wife of Enguerrand III de Coucy, seigneur de Coucy et de Marle, son and successor of Raoul de Coucy, sire de Coucy et Marle, and his second wife Alix de Dreux. They had three daughters, all of whom would have progeny, and three sons Enguerrand, Raoul and Jean. Of their sons only Raoul would have progeny. In 1250 Raoul died at the Battle of Mansourah in Egypt during the Seventh Crusade, defending the life of King Louis IX.
On the death of her brother Mathieu in 1262, Marie brought the titles and properties of the house of Montmirail and Oisy to the house of Coucy. In 1264 she gave over all her lordships to her son Enguerrand, reserving for herself only the title of Dame de la Fère.
Marie died about 1273. She was buried at the Abbey of Longpont, near her father.
