- BIOGRAPHY
Sir John Willoughby was born about 1421, the son of Sir John Willoughby, de jure Lord Latimer, and Joan Welby. Before 4 March 1444 he married Anne (Agnes) Cheney, daughter of Edmund Cheney and Alice Stafford. In consequence of his marriage his interests and activities were transferred to the counties of Wiltshire and Dorset.
In 1445 he was involved in a commission of enquiry into illicit shipment of wool from county Lincoln. In 1446 he received a pardon for intrusions onto the lands of his inheritance without licence.
He was sheriff of Dorset in 1455-56, and served on various commissions of oyer and terminer (literally 'to hear and determine') in Wiltshire, and as a justice of the peace from 1453 onwards.
John Willoughby was knighted on 3 May 1461 by King Edward IV at Tewkesbury; and received a general pardon under the style of John Willoughby of Broke, knight. He was not summoned to Parliament.
He was definitely alive in 1475, but dead by August 1477.
