- BIOGRAPHY
Johann was born about 1297, the only child of Rudolf III, Graf von Habsburg-Laufenburg, and his first wife Elisabeth von Rapperswil. He succeeded his father as Graf von Habsburg-Laufenburg after his death in 1315. In 1314 he became landgrave in the Klettgau and steward of the abbey of Rheinau. In 1315 he renewed the town rights of the citizens of Laufenburg.
Before 15 July 1328 Johann married Agnes von Werd, daughter of Sigismund, Graf von Werd, landgrave of Lower Alsace. They had seven children, of whom Johann II, Rudolf IV and Adelheid would have progeny.
Johann was an unlucky ruler, his misfortune mainly due to his support of the losing side in the 'Revolution in Zürich' triggered by the knight and mayor of Zürich, Rudolf Brun and his Brun Guild Constitution. Johann granted Rudolf Brun asylum in his castle of Rapperswil, and in the further course of these events, which became known as the Battle of Grynau, he was killed on 21 September 1337, along with Graf Diethelm II von Toggenburg.
