- BIOGRAPHY
The first Aubrey de Vere in England after the Norman conquest was born before 1040, probably in Normandy. While it is generally agreed that he derived his surname from Ver in the Côtentin, it is certain that he was not the seigneur of Ver, for neither he nor his sons appear as holding land there, or indeed anywhere in Normandy.
Aubrey and his wife Béatrice had five sons. The eldest, Geoffrey, was cured of a serious illness by Abbot Farice, but succumbed to a second illness, after instigating the gift of Kensington church to Abingdon. Their other sons were Aubrey, Roger, Robert and William. Aubrey I and Béatrice may also have had a daughter. He died before 1113 and was buried at Colne Abbey. He was succeeded by Aubrey II.
