  BIOGRAPHY Burkard I, is the first Hohenzollern mentioned in a reliable source, was known as von Zollern (de Zolorin). His origins remain very much in the dark. In the annals of Berthold, a monk in Reichenau, in 1061 _Burchardus de Zolorin_ was killed in battle. Burkard's father might have been Friedrich, a count in Sülichgau. Burkard's son, also Friedrich, married and had progeny.
