- BIOGRAPHY
Guillaume I de Craon, vicomte de Châteaudun, was the younger son of Amaury III, sire de Craon et de Sablé, and his first wife Isabelle de Sainte-Maure. On 4 May 1341 he married Marguerite de Dampierre, daughter of Jean de Dampierre, seigneur de Crevecoeur et d'Aleux, and Béatrix de Châtillon. They had eight children of whom three sons, Guillaume II, Pierre and Jean, and a daughter Béatrix, would have progeny. In 1373, following the death of his brother Maurice VII, Guillaume became seigneur de Sablé, Sainte Maure, Champtocé et Ingrandes. He became chamberlain to the French kings Philippe VI and Jean II 'the Good'. He was also close to Louis I, duc d'Anjou, brother of Jean II. He died on 8 June 1387 at Châteaudun, and was buried at the abbey of the Cordeliers there.
