- BIOGRAPHY
Alain, known as 'le Noir', was born about 1084, the third son of Eudon I, vicomte de Porhoët et de Rennes, and Anne de Léon, daughter of Guyomarch II, vicomte de Léon. He was the first viscount of Rohan and viscount of Castelnoce/Castennec. With his wife Villana he had two sons of whom Alain II would have progeny and succeed him.
In 1116 Alain received as his inheritance the sparsely populated western Porhoët. He also owned a castle at Castennec and constructed another on the shores of the Oust which he named Rohan, the name he passed on to his descendants. In 1128 Alain finished constructing his permanent residences and founded the priory on land he donated at La Couarde in Castennec for the monks at Redon Abbey, and a priory for Marmoutier Abbey near the château de Rohan. He died about that year.
