- BIOGRAPHY
Ramnulf I was born about 815, the son of Gerhard, comte d'Auvergne, and Rotrud or Hildegard de France, daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor Louis I 'the Pious' and Irmingard/Ermengard. He was a count of Poitiers (from 835) and duke of Aquitaine (from 852). About 845 he married a daughter (possibly called Bilechild) of Rorico, comte de Rennes et Maine. They had a son Ramnulf II who would have progeny.
Few other details are known about Ramnulf I except that he died in October 866 in Aquitaine from wounds received in the Battle of Brissarthe on 15 September that year against Vikings (in which Rutpert IV, Graf in Wormsgau, duke of Francia, also died). He was succeeded by Ramnulf II.
