- BIOGRAPHY
Ermgard van Wisch, Vrijvrouwe van Wisch, Bronkhorst en Borculo, was born about 1505, the daughter of Henrick van Wisch and Walburg van den Bergh. In 1532 she married the very rich Johan Scheiffart van Merode. He died in 1537, and as his childless widow she inherited his estates. In 1539 she married Graaf Georg van Limburg-Stirum, son of Adolf van Limburg, Heer van Stirum, and Elisabeth von Reichenstein. She bore him a son and daughter who would both have progeny.
Ermgard then became the heir of her brother Joachim whose marriage was childless and who was not on speaking terms with their mother. When Joachim died in 1541 Ermgard faced conflict with her mother who disputed Joachim's wills made in 1537 and 1540. However her mother's death in 1547 left her inheritance undisputed.
In 1553 her cousin Joost, Graaf van Bronckhorst died, also leaving her his heir, even though Joost had left her name out of his testament. This involved her in yet another dispute, this time with Graf Rudolf von Diepholz, taking until 1562 before the inheritance of Joost van Bronckhorst was finally settled.
Ermgard died in May 1583, aged almost eighty.
