- BIOGRAPHY
Bonacosta was born about 1254, the daughter of Squarcino Borri and his wife Antonia. The Borri family was originally from the town of Santo Stefano Ticino and held some feudal lands near Corby. It was one of the most respected families in Milan, and counted among its ranks Saint Monas, a bishop of Milan from the late 3rd to the early 4th century.
Once the Visconti had conquered Milan, in 1269 Squarcino Borri gave Bonacosta in marriage to Matteo I Visconti, lord of Milan, son of Teobaldo Visconti and Anastasia Pirovana, to cement bonds essential to maintaining the rule of the Visconti. She and Matteo had ten children, of whom Galeazzo I, Stefano and Catharina would have progeny. Bonacosta and her husband co-founded of the chapel of St. Thomas in the Basilica of Sant'Eustrogio of Milan. She died in Milan on 13 January 1321, and was buried in the chapel of St. Thomas, and her husband, her son Stefano and two daughters Beatrice and Catharina, and the brother of Matteo, Uberto Visconti, would also be buried there.
