He belonged to an ancient Herefordshire family. However, as he was a younger son he became a page to the Earl of Montagu in his embassy to the court of France in 1671. The following year he rode as a private gentleman in the 3rd troop of guards, from which position he was appointed quartermaster to the Earl of Peterborough's regiment of horse. Here he attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.
In 1694 he married, and with 1,800 guineas from his wife's dowry, he purchased the command of the king's own regiment of dragoons, which he retained until he died. In 1707 he distinguished himself in the battle of Almanza and in 1710 at Almemara. In 1709 he had attained the rank of Lieutenant-General. In 1715, at Preston, he forced the rebels under Lord Derwentwater to surrender.
In 1716 he was appointed Governor of Minorca and subsequently became commander-in-chief of all the forces in Scotland. On 29 May 1719, he was elevated to the peerage of Ireland as Baron Carpenter of Killaghy.
