- BIOGRAPHY
Dietrich was born in 1205, the son of Richard III de Montfaucon, Graf von Mömpelgard, sire de Montfaucon, and Agnès de Bourgogne. He succeeded his father as Graf von Mömpelgard about 1227 or 1228.
After 15 May 1226 he married Alix von Pfirt, dame de Belfort, daughter of Friedrich II, Graf von Pfirt, and a lady of the Egisheim family. They had three daughters who would have progeny, and a son Richard V who did not.
In 1248 Dietrich founded the first hospital for the poor in Mömpelgard/Montbéliard, outside the city, which would be placed under the protection of Pope Innocent IV.
When Dietrich's son Richard died without progeny in 1278, Dietrich bequeathed the county of Mömpelgard to his great granddaughter Guillemette von Neuenburg, daughter of Amadeus, Herr von Neuenburg, and granddaughter of Dietrich's daughter Sibille who had married Rudolf III, Herr von Neuenburg. Guillemette was married to Reinald, son of Hugues 'de Châlons', count palatine of Burgundy, and Reinald became Graf von Mömpelgard in right of his wife after Dietrich's death about 1282 or 1283.
