- BIOGRAPHY
Geoffroy was the second son of Guillaume IV Taillefer, comte d'Angoulême, and Girberge d'Anjou. Upon the death of his father in 1028, from the castle of Blaye Geoffroy started a feud with his older brother Alduin II. After an eight-day siege he was forced to capitulate. His brother forgave him and granted him the fief over two castles in the Saintonge. Nevertheless, on Alduin's death in 1032 Geoffroy took over the rule in Angoulême, ignoring the inheritance of his nephews.
Geoffroy first married Pétronille d'Archiac, dame d'Archiac, daughter of Mainard 'Le Riche' d'Archiac and his wife Hildegarde. They had six children of whom Foulques and Humberge are recorded with progeny. Pétronille was her father's heir to the castles of Archiac and Bouteville. The couple founded the priory of Saint-Paul in Bouteville, where Pétronille was buried. Geoffroy's second wife was Asceline, but nothing is recorded about her. Geoffroy died in December 1048.
