- BIOGRAPHY
Guntram, known as 'der Reiche' (the Rich), was the son of Hugo I, Graf vom Nordgau, and Hildegard von Pfirt (de Ferrette). He was count of Altenburg, the Sundgau, the Aargau and Vindonissa, count of Alsace from 917 to 954, and one of the first ancestors of the house of Habsburg. He was a brother of Eberhard IV, Graf vom Nordgau, and Hugo II, Graf von Egisheim.
In 945 he married Brigantine, Gräfin von Montfort, with whom he had a son Lanzelin who would have progeny. Guntram's second marriage was to Ithe, Gräfin von Calw.
Guntran was the largest landholder in the Bas-Rhin region of Alsace. He was stripped of a large part of his holdings in Alsace, Brisgau and Thurgau by Emperor Otto I 'the Great' at the Diet of Augsburg in August 952, under the pretext of high treason. This was the occasion for the first mention of Habsburg in history.
He died on 26 March 973.
