- BIOGRAPHY
Ludwig was born at castle of Burghausen on 23 September 1417, the son of Heinrich IV 'der Reiche', Herzog von Bayern-Landshut, and Margarete of Austria. On 21 February 1452 at Landshut Ludwig married Herzogin Amalie von Sachsen, daughter of Friedrich II 'der Sanftmütige', Kurfürst von Sachsen, and Margarethe of Austria. Ludwig and Amalie had four children of whom the two eldest, Georg and Margarete, who married Philipp 'der Aufrichtige', Kurfürst von der Pfalz, would have progeny.
At the battle of Giengen in 1462 Ludwig defeated Albrecht Achilles, Kurfürst von Brandenburg, who was attempting to extend his influence in Franconia. Ludwig's invasion of the imperial free cities of Dinkelsbühl and Donauwörth led to war with Emperor Friedrich III which lasted until a peace treaty was agreed in Prague in 1463. Ludwig expelled from his dukedom all Jews who rejected baptism.
In 1472 Ludwig founded the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Ingolstadt, which was moved to Landshut in 1800 and finally to Munich. The wedding of his son Georg with Jadwiga of Poland in November 1475 was celebrated in Landshut with one of the most splendid festivals of the Middle Ages.
Ludwig died in Landshut on 14 January 1479. His tomb lies in the Zisterzienserinnen cloister of Seligenthal in Landshut.
