- BIOGRAPHY
Jeanne de Bretagne was born in 1319, the daughter of Guy de Bretagne, comte de Penthièvre, and Jeanne d'Avaugour. She was known as Jeanne de Penthièvre, and as Jeanne 'la Boiteuse' (the Lame). Her father was the second son of Arthur II, duc de Bretagne, by his first wife Marie, vicomtesse de Limoges. Arthur II was succeeded as duke of Brittany by Guy's elder brother Jean III.
Jeanne was one of the protagonists of the Breton War of Succession. On 4 June 1337 in Paris she married Charles de Châtillon de Blois, son of Guy I de Châtillon, comte de Blois, and Marguerite de Valois. Of their five children, Jean and Marie would have progeny. When Jeanne's uncle Jean III 'le Bon' died childless in 1341 she succeeded him as reigning duchess of Brittany in her own right, and the couple assumed the rule of the duchy, being supported by most of the local nobility and administration.
However Jeanne's uncle Jean IV, born from the second marriage of Duke Arthur II to Yolande de Dreux, comtesse de Montfort, did not agree to let go of his own rights. The result was the Breton War of Succession, which would end in 1364 with the death of Charles de Châtillon de Blois in battle and the victory of the Montfort line, leaving Jean V, the son of Jean IV, as reigning duke of Brittany. Over the course of the war the military successes varied, and both claimants ruled some parts of the country. Jeanne's party was stronger at least about 1345, and they may have held a larger part of the duchy than their rivals over the entire 1341-64 period.
Jeanne died on 10 September 1384.
